The Professional School Darmstadt 1947-48
The School Building on the Steubenplatz 17 |
The school was established in the remains of the Main-Neckar train station (Main-Neckar-Bahnhof) at the Steubenplatz 17 in Darmstadt. The same building hosted in the 1920's the State Welfare Department and from 1937 the Nazi's welfare organization of the district Hesse-Nassau and was named the "Jacob-Sprenger house" after the Nazi local official.
On the Steubenplatz was also the Ludwigs train station(Ludwigsbahnhof), right next to the Main-Neckar train station(Main-Neckar-Bahnhof), which holds today the Social Court of the State Hessen (Hessisches Landessozialgericht). An exhibition in the foyer displays part of the story of the school. |

The Darmstaedter Echo, Tuesday December 9, 1947 tells of the building which hosted the School: "Die erste juedische Berufsfachschule, die in Deutschland besteht, wurde am Freitag im Rahmen einer Feier im alten Bahnhofsgebaeude am Steubenplatz in Darmstadt durch den Leiter der Militaerregierung fuer den Stadt- und Landkreis Darmstadt, Oberst Rose eroeffnet."
