The Professional School Darmstadt 1947-48
The Jewish Community 1945 - 1949

In Darmstadt, I presume, that not all the Jewish population was registered in the Jewish Community. To my despair, no records can be found of this intermediate after the war period.

This is the beginning of a compilation of Jews living in Darmstadt after 1946

Paul Arnsberg in his book "Die Juedischen Gemeinden in Hessen" writes that the Jewish Community was created in 1946 by Max Zwirn. He and Alexander Haas, who returned to Darmstadt from Buchenwald in 1045) were the leaders in the community. The community was hat the beginning in the Wendelstadtstrasse 5 . Arnsberg speaks about 200 members but does not specific state at what date. He says that they are to a large part DP's from the "Osten" who were at the end of the war in camps in the areas nearby Darmstadt. He speaks of young people . To aid and educate these youngsters, Samuel Battaillon (bad misspelling of the name) established the professional school. He then goes on stating that these former Dp's emigrated to Israel in the years 1947-48 and some of them to the USA.(page 129).He then goes on that there were about 100 members in 1948 in the Darmstadt close area. The community residence moved to the Osannstrasse 11(3 km distance to the school at the Steubenplatz). The head of the community was then Max Wolf, followed by David Horning (as student at the TU (see list of students) and then by (when the book was published in 1971) Josef Fraenkel, a former student at the TU (see list of students). As long as the Jewish soldiers from the US MIlitary forces were stationed in the Darmstadt, there were regular weekly religious services.
Arnsberg continues to tell us that until 1948 there a few small stores. Now 1969-1970 there were a few members who operated bars and there were some students from Israel at the TU Hochschule. These bar owners are the Ehrlich brothers, the Altkorn brother, who were students st the professional School and Usherowitz, another student at the school. They were then in Darmstadt. The Altkorn's had been in Argentina and had returned to Darmstadt.
